PGA HOPE began in 2015 with the mission of positively impacting Veterans’ lives through the game of golf. Within the Philadelphia PGA Section, PGA REACH Philadelphia has reached over 1,000 Veterans through the program, with a goal of engaging an additional 600 Veterans in 2025. Nationally, PGA HOPE has impacted more than 17,000 Veterans and is active in all 50 states.
As the program grew, so did the need for recruitment and leadership at each location. To meet this need, PGA REACH Philadelphia established the Squad Leader program, allowing program graduates to return as leaders to assist with recruitment, attendance, post-session meet-ups, and overall program leadership.
Today, we are proud to spotlight one of our incredible squad leaders—a true advocate for Veterans—whose remarkable service both in and out of uniform has left a lasting impact on our PGA HOPE family.
James Frawley, a graduate of our PGA HOPE Bensalem location, is a U.S. Navy Veteran who served in two combat tours during the Vietnam War. During his military service, Jim earned numerous honors, including the Navy Commendation Ribbon, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon.
After his time in the Navy, James continued his life of service. He spent over two decades with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, where he excelled in emergency management and law enforcement. His impressive career also included roles as an NYPD officer, firearms instructor, and adjunct professor at Seton Hall University.
Since joining PGA HOPE, James’s passion for the program has been extraordinary. His dedication led him to become a squad leader last spring at Bensalem Township Country Club and again this fall at Makefield Highlands Golf Club. His commitment extends beyond his personal involvement—he introduced his son, who also followed in his footsteps by joining the military, to the program, sharing their mutual love of PGA HOPE.

James is a vital asset to our PGA HOPE team, devoting his energy to making the program a safe and supportive space for Veterans to thrive. His efforts not only inspire fellow Veterans but also introduce the game of golf to those who may have never considered it a passion.
